If you have been away for 6 years or more, you do not have to pay the Military Tax. As you know, that's my case.

Ok, there seems to be enough confusion about the whole issue to warrant an
official explanation. I will try to get the information from the people I
have talked to here. Of course, this is Canton Vaud, and it might well be
different from canton to canton. But it will be a good base.

Also, I really need to sort out the "if you have been away 6 years or more,
they leave you alone issue". I was gone just over 6 years, and I have been
called back (granted, I am in the "reserve" now). I am sure others will want
to know.

Finally, a quick survey:
Do these military issues tend to make you want to stay abroad, rather than
come back to Switzerland?
[ ] Absolutely
[ ] They might influence my decision
[ ] Not at all, it doesn't matter

Please send the answers to me, and I will compile and send results (if
worthy) to the list.
