For information -

After 6 years spent in California, I have recently moved back to
Switzerland. I was quickly contacted by the military people (of course).
They announced that since I had not paid my military taxes (because I
was abroad) in 1995, I would have to fill out the usual detailed form
describing my income sources, etc...

Of course, I was surprised, since I have always paid whenever I was
asked to. And quite frankly, it is a bit of a pain to have to go back to
your records of 5 years ago in order to find the information needed for
the declaration.

After asking questions, I found out that since 1995, people abroad are
NOT taxed while abroad, but WHEN THEY GET BACK. I didn't know about this
fact, and think it is rather annoying (see above) and PAINFUL (when you
suddenly have to pay this on top of all other moving-related expenses).

So, I thought I would pass this along. If you haven't received anything
concerning your military tax liability, they have not forgotten about
you...

The good news is: the new military gear is much nicer than it used to
be... but the smell is still the same! :)

Cheers,

Laurent
