Dear Laurent,

When I was paid by Stanford under a J-1 visa, I got the first year FICA and
Medicare free.

Then the second year I had to pay both of them. I checked at that time and
this is a regular practice which is compatible with rules in exercise.

I believe in you case you have to pay these tax right away if you are under
a H-1B. What I don't know is if you can get some of them back when you leave
the US.
