Hi Ladies and Gents,
                    I forwarded the question of Hansjurg to the visa
specialist of the UC Berkeley Foreign Scholar Office. She is very
knowledgable in that matter. Here is what she answered:

> that you have finished with the institution you are visiting and do

> It is possible to return in the J-1 Short Term Scholar category
> which gives you a maximum of six months without extension if the
> 12 months has not passed.

> If you have a valid IAP-66 and J-1 visa stamp re-entry there is
> no limitation on the time that you may be out of the country as
> long as your university agrees. For that reason the best advice
> for any J-1 that is about to travel is to contact their
> International Office for advice.
